'97 900 SETC, cranks no start. Five spd manual, 109K. Usually get a single misfire or backfire on the initial crank. Doesn't seem to be fuel pump related, as I can smell fuel after 3-4 10 second sessions cranking. Swapped in my spare DIC, no change. It's cold in New England, so I doubt it's the crank position sensor. Dash lights are dim when I turn the key to the on position, with a 2 month old battery, even after it was charged for a few hours. Spent a few hours here searching for instructions on more definitively diagnosing, with no luck.
Oh, and last time I drove the car, I came back to find the hazards flashing. I assumed my 2 year old had pushed the button, but he didn't... the button was off. I turned the hazards on then off, and all seemed well. Started up, drove to the store. Started up, drove home, sat a few days, and now...
I'm pretty well convinced that it's the ignition switch. It was replaced once already under warranty when the car was much newer, I seem to recall much the same sort of thing, it just wouldn't start in a parking lot a few hours after driving in, early in cold season.
As I'm a cheap and lazy SOB (!), I don't want to spend the $$ on the part, or more importantly, spend hours taking the console and shifter apart, only to find that wasn't the problem. So how can I confirm that it's the electrical part of the ignition switch that's bad? Electrical troubleshooting is not one of my strengths. I have a meter, but need some step by step guidance please!!
TIA
