Hi Everyone,
Great site. I apologise up front if this question has already been addressed in one form or another, but I'll bring it up again. I am thinking of buying a 9-3 SE, 2001-2002, lowest mileage I can find. Whether from a dealer or private sale remains to be seen (there is a well established Saab dealership locally that carries models from that era).
What are the major red flags to look out for? Some of the more discussed issues seem to be the oil sludge problem: is there an economical way to check for this problem before purchasing? There have also been references to the DIC and serpintine belts. Are these things I could bargain with the dealership to have addressed before purchase?
Years ago I had an '89 900Turbo, bought it in 94. It was great for a few years, only minimal issues. But the last year/year and a half I owned it was a never ending (and expensive) headache. It seemed every time the hood was lifted it was going to cost me $500. I ditched it and bought a maxima in 98, (that I'm still driving daily) but that car has gone WAY beyond the point of upkeep vs. keeping it.
So maybe I'm waxing nostalgic for the good times of my old 900T, but I do want a hatchback that is not embarrassing to be seen in, with some GO, but on the other hand I don't want a little Japanese pocket-rocket either. As a middle aged guy from the suburbs, comfort and utility beats out pure speed for my needs, but some speed is still good:))
Thanks for your input.
