My transmission has worsened. I just got my 2002 Viggen's gearbox aligned by a very reputable shop in response to some shifting problems.
I am now very concerned as to what's going on. The alignment of the gearbox did improve going into 5th. I've decided to record some of the behavior. I do apologize if this seems like a lot of info, but this a description of what's happening and if you could figure this out for me I would be overwhelmingly pleased. So here it goes:
I had difficulty getting into gears today. This evening my car began "sticking" while going into 4th. The gear lever would go halfway and then feel as if it would not go further in. It took a couple tries to get it into fourth. This was while merging on to 66, so being in gear was pretty essential at that point. I figured it was going to be a fluke but it has happened now several times.
Reverse felt very hard to achieve when arriving back home and parking. When I have difficulty getting into reverse, I sometimes try to put it into another gear first. When i did that, I felt a great deal of resistance.
Tonight I decided to push the clutch in and move from gear to gear a few times with the car stopped and idling. This was just to see what would happen. The gear lever was very difficult to get out of 4th twice, 3rd once, and was difficult entering all gears. What I mean by that is that it wasn't locking into gear as with what happened on my 99' 9-3 (where you couldn't get out again) it was simply very difficult.
Shutting the car off and doing the same thing was like a hot knife through butter. There was no resistance.
I opened the car door with the car back on so I could hear any noises. The transmission did not seem to make any terrible sounds. You could hear the typical mechanical sound each time a gear was engaged and it did not seem to change from gear to gear. There were no special noises when a gear was more difficult to engage than when it was easier going in. Again this was just sitting at idle.
In addition, it must be noted that downshifting continues to be silky smooth. I often go from 3rd to 2nd around town, as well as 4th to 3rd, and everything feels so very smooth.
My description of what 4th feels like (going halfway in and then getting stuck or becoming difficult to engage further) seems to be consistent with how 2nd feels about 50% of the time now. When shifting from 1st to 2nd, I feel a great deal of resistance and hear a low crunching noise. Other times it moves through quite nicely. It seems to be dependent on no phenomenon I am able to see, feel or hear.
