Sludge - maybe the gods are smiling

My 2002 9-3, purchased new, is 6 years old, and approaching 60K miles. I am currently doing most of the 60K service myself, leaving a few more difficult jobs for the dealer.
For the first time I removed the valve cover to check for sludge. The valve train and cover were as clean as a whistle. What a relief! I tightened a few bolts, observed that the timing chain probably will have to be replaced before 100K (definitely stretched), and replaced the cover. As an added bonus the original gaskets were in great condition and still perfectly attached. I didn’t even have to break out the spare gasket set. After about 200 miles on the highway I have not observed any leaks. I also replaced the original spark plugs – with a noticeable improvement in drivability.
For the first 40K miles I used Saab semi-synthetic oil at Saab service bays. I always change oil every 5000 miles. Thereafter I have used local service stations, mostly providing my own Mobil 1 0-40 fully synthetic in accordance with the Technical Service Bulletin sent to dealers. I have lived in Florida (twice), Kentucky and Illinois, with all the climatic extremes that one might expect, from frigid winters to very hot summers. My journeys have been mostly local, with plenty of opportunity for moisture to accumulate in the oil and contribute to sludge. About once a month I drive a 400-mile round trip.
Maybe I’m just lucky, but I do believe the right oil and frequent changes are the answer.
