Have you ever tried to drain the tranny fluid with the subframe in place? If you did, you'd know that there's about an inch of clearance between the lower part of the gearbox and the subframe. There's no room to move it sideways.
Just drop the subframe as Nahum's suggesting. It will be much easier, and the work will progress much faster if you get a good amount of space around the clutch.
