Rotor epoxyed to Distributor shaft

Just had a frustrating afternoon. I bought the 900S 1996 about 8 weeks ago and it ran like a charm until fog hit us two days ago. Obviously I was getting a spark leak caused by the humidity and, found that it was the distributor cap- coil cable. Someone had not pushed the cable well enough into the cap and the continued arcing has eaten away a fair section of the cap. It was hidden from casual glance. However the frustration came when I tried to remove the rotor. It was impossible to move. The harder I worked at it the more I damaged it and the more important to put a new one in place. Eventually I broke the rotor off the shaft in pieces only to find that someone had epoxyed the rotor on the shaft. The epoxy was solid and had been in place a long time.
Was this an OEM assembly method? I read on this board that there were some dimension changes about 96 - could someone have decided to make sure the rotor was solid. If this is a one-off situation, then it is resolved but if it has been used by other mechanics then the DIY guys should know.
