I'm looking at a 900 convertible for sale, and would appreciate any comments. I've owned a 1993 9000 turbo for about eight years (and do my own work), but don't know much about 900s (except that I don't think it's possible they could be MORE expensive to maintain than a 9000 ... ).
The car in question is a 1995 900 convertible, S model, 2.3 liters, auto, no turbo. It's got about 100k miles and allegedly has a clean Carfax, which of course I would confirm before I buy. It's for sale by a used car dealer who bought it at auction.
Here's what I know:
--no visible rust or signs of body damage (it even still has those plastic things that resemble tiny mudflaps hanging under the car about halfway between the front and rear wheels -- what the hell are those?).
--interior good except for VERY tired front leather seats, with one small rip. OEM radio is dead, but all the other gizmos appear to be working, including power locks and windows. Paint appears original -- ie fairly tired, but not a quick-and-dirty respray.
--car appears to have been reasonably well maintained. Brake fluid is clean. Tranny fluid appears OK but hasn't been flushed for a while. Oil is OK. Four matching Dunlop tires of the correct size. Glove box has the original case and the service manual, but no owner's manual, plus a receipt showing it passed emissions in 2001.
--convertible top is in very good shape inside and out -- no rips or tears. However, one piece of rubber trim is coming loose on one side. The power mechanism does work except for one small thing -- when you're closing the top, it stops just before it's about to replace the rear window glass and gives a "check top" message. The problem is that the plastic cover is hung up on one side and needs only one VERY mild push to fall into place ... at which point the top completes its cycle with no problems. Front latches appear to work properly.
--biggest potential issue appears to be that the "check tranny" light comes on, the tranny won't start in (or shift up/down to) first gear. Dealer says the cure is to turn the ignition off and then on again, at which point first gear does indeed work. He says this is a problem when it's cold (it was approx 45 degrees outside when I drove the car).
--a/c does blow cold. heater controls work (no ACC, thank god).
--Car has passed safety, but I will need to pass emissions test. Engine idles well but "hunts" by a few hundred rpm in a regular pattern (maybe typical of intake leak?)
Asking price is $3,000 ... dealer says he began at $4,300 and has been sliding the price down. He admits that January is not the best time to be selling a convertible. There might be another couple of hundred dollars that could be knocked off, but not much more.
Any feedback appreciated.
Regards,
Graham
PS: car will be for my daughter, but I will remain the chief mechanic.
