The NSS problem only occurs when the engine is warm. It never happens 1st thing in the morning when the engine is cold.
You turn the key and all the dash lights come on like normal but the starter never engages. There's no click noise coming from the starter. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour later the problem goes away.
I had this problem for almost a year and everyone recommended changing ignition, starter, battery and many other parts. When I realized the NSS was on top of the tranny and close to the engine I figured it must be heat related and that the problem goes away after it cools down.
I bought a new NSS from eeuroparts.com and my mechanic installed it for $70 and haven't had a problem since. That was over a year ago.
No idea on the life of one. From the number of postings I see here it must be a fairly common problem.
