The meaning with a superseded part number is that it (and the part) takes the place of the old number and part.
So yes, certainly, the new number will fit in the old car.
But, and this is a big question mark on "some" parts. Just because a newer part fits backwards in years doesn't mean an old part fits forwards in years.
Sometimes, they make a newer part multifit in many years but the older parts doesn't have the proper mounting or so forth to make it fit in newer ones.
