Oil Sending Unit

I am going to replace my Oil sending unit on my 96 900T, as I believe I have a leak from it. I read where I have to remove the Oil dipstick tube. Is it necessary to drop or remove part of the exhaust system, to access the unit. Also, What size is the original unit? Somewhere I picked up that the nut on replacement parts may be different size from the original. Thanks for the help.
