Hello all,
For the past 20,000 miles or so my 2002 9-3SE made a rattle noise from the rear end. Could not figure out what it was. There was a popping noise everytime I tapped the brake pedal. When I would begin braking the rattle would go away, a pop noise would occur, and then there would be no noises at all until I got off the brake, where the rattle noise would begin again. Well, I finally figured out what it was. One of my brake pads on the rear caliper was moving around a bit. The rear brake hardware kit (pins and springs) was rusted very badly. So I got rid of all the old stuff and took out the pads. I cleaned out the calipers a bit and cleaned the backs of the pads. Then I applied a blue brake squeel lube to the backs of the pads. That way they would fit better. Then I used the green brake lube on all the pins and springs. The noise is gone. Now, that I had the tires off, I realized that the rear shocks are shot. Theres always something.
