The car is 2000 Viggen with 107k miles. The oil has been changed every 5k~7k miles using Saab filter and Mobil1 0-W40. PCV #6 was done about 5k miles ago and since about 2k miles ago I noticed ticking noise from engine that varies with RPM. It sounded loud when the noise reflected on some kind of wall while driving with windows down. I searched here and went to a good Saab technician to find out. Research here suggested valve lifter ticking, worn pulley on serpentine belt, etc. The Saab tech thought it was ignition pack that sits between the engine and throttle body. Actually it sounded like it was coming from there. Until then I never suspected low engine oil until the engine oil light came on while hard cornering. The dipstick didn't even register oil. I pour half a quart and voila~ the noise was completely gone. It probably was valve lifter noise from lack of oil. It's never happened before between oil changes. Before the car consumed about a quart between the oil changes. Now it seems the consumption rate is twice as fast as before.

For the experts here, how damaging is the lifter ticking due to oil shortage? I drove about 2k as ticking noise grew louder.

Also, some here say PCV #6 shouldn't cause more oil consumption, but a number of people here and 9-5 board report the same observations. Should this be worrisome? Or is it minor and normal behavior for this engine with proper crankcase pressure? I'd appreciate thoughts and speculations.
