Ok, so my brother has recently let me use his 96 900 turbo 5-speed for a couple of weeks, and lately the transmission has been acting funny and not matter what I try I can't seem to fix the problem.

Driving home from work a week ago, the transmission became very "notchy" and it was harder to get the car in gear. I thought it was the clutch cable at first because it felt a lot like the clutch wasn't disengaging all the way when the pedal was depressed. There was a lot of slack in the cable and I tightened it up, but the transmission was still hard to shift. It is also making a "whirring" noise (like the car is backing up) when the clutch is half depressed in first and second only.

So I looked at the car a little more and noticed that a bolt that holding the transmission housing had fallen out and the transmission was not lined up with the engine properly. So I bought a new bolt, straightened out the transmission and tightened it up to the block. This seemed to help a bit, but still didn't eliminate the problem.

So flushed the transmission oil...still the same problem...but slightly better.

...then I get a phone call and an old friend from college wants to go on a road trip around maine. I'm poor and I can't say no...so instead of signing over my paycheck to mobil (my jeep gets 17 mpg)..I take the saab, plus the saab is so much better on the highway (quiet, fast, and handles really well).

Over the course of the trip the transmission became more and more difficult and I found myself double clutching just to get it in gear. Sometimes it would grid going in. 1st and second were fine and as long as I wasn't speed shifting, but 3rd was very difficult to get in without a little grinding, and 5th was hard to find.

I don't think the problem is the clutch because it doesn't slip, The shifting linkage is fine (checked it tonight), and the clutch cable is still tight.

Does anybody have any idea what this problem could be?
