Most "unexpected" HD actiity is caused by a lack of memory... the system is swapping.

That said, try dowloading procexp.exe from Microsoft. It's a deluxe version of TaskMgr. It will give you a much better look at what's running and what's chewing up CPU time, memory, or disk. You can get very granular in terms of exactly what sort of activity the disk is doing.

If you are using DSL, make sure you don't have any ISP supplied software installed. You only need the software that supports your network card and MS networking - no ISP BS.

I'd remove Norton - it's a virus unto itself and is a horrible system abuser. Check the Norton site for instructions on removal. I beleive they have a tool to truly remove it now since a Windows uninstall does not remove it all (it really is a virus). Install AVGFree from avgfree.com and Zone Alarm as an outbound firewall - that's all you need and both are low load on the system. Your router will protect you against inbound attack.

OH... and this is the wrong board.
