$1000 seems on the ragged edge of "fair," in my experience.

I just got this done myself last week on my 2001 9-3 SE. I paid $656.80 for the evaporator kit from eEuroparts.com (it seems we have the exact same evaporator, part # 5047931), and my AC specialist charged me $176 labor/materials including tax. So around $833 grand total. My AC guy, who is extremely competent, experienced and honest, said that it was one of the easiest evaporators to get to. Certainly a far cry from the Volvo 850s and S70s!

Anyway, a word of warning - DO NOT be tempted to get the aftermarket evaporator kit from eEuroparts, which costs $250 less than the OEM kit! It will not work. The heatsink on it is about an inch lower than on the OEM unit, and your evaporator shroud/cover will not be able to go back on! I am in the process of returning the aftermarket unit to eEuroparts for a refund, and I plan to tell them to stop selling this low quality Chinese knock-off. It cost me an extra $100 in labor to find that out.

That said, eEuroparts had the lowest price on these ($850 was the next lowest price I could find), and have so far been very helpful and shipped out the OEM evaporator kit very promptly. I hope they treat me well with this $400 return.
