I am going to assume you have a manual transmission...
I think the best way to avoid the turbo lag is a change of driving habits. You'll want to keep the rpms up above 2,500 if you want full power at a moment's notice. So if you shift from one gear to the next and end up at 1,900RPM, you're not going to go anywhere for a couple of seconds. However, if you take it up to 4,500 and then shift, you should end up at 2,500 and get much better results. The reverse is true when slowing down, you'll want to downshift to keep yourself in tune to what gear you'll need in case the light turns green, etc. You'll start off by driving a little more "lurchy" around town, but it's worth the effort to get the hang of shifting smooth but keeping the rpms up. Unfortunately, there is always a bit of lurch when going from partial throttle to off-throttle and back again.
I keep my rpms up close to 3,000 during city driving. Passengers say things like "reving this thing up enough, are we?" or they bob their head back and forth to make fun of me. I simply stomp on the gas and they stop talking and start looking for something to hold on to...
