Water causing CEL and engine sputtering? (long) Posted by ToddM [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Hi all. I have a 1996 SET with 136,000 miles. I have been trying to track down a CEL problem/poor gas mileage (and occasional engine hesitation/sputtering issue) for a while. One pattern that I've noticed is that my CEL will come on after going through a car wash (usually code 1171 or 1172, though sometime 0132 and 138)
Yesterday it was snowing/raining here in Denver and my engine started hesitating shortly after driving the wet streets. The issue cleared up on it's own (as it usually does). Then I drove into a puddle and the CEL immediately came on with a 1172 and the engine started to miss/hesitate. Any clues here?
Here's the recent list of items I've tried to solve the problem:
IN LAST SIX MONTHS
Cleaned the throttle body
Cleaned the IAC
New evaporative purge valve
New fuel filter
New plugs (NGK BCPR7ES gapped to 0.035") Old plugs had correct gap, but we're "sooty"
Replaced cracked hose from throttle body to crank case valve
TWO YEARS AGO
New thermostat
Put in new front O2 sensor (spliced the wires)
New DI cassette
I'm wondering if the water is hitting the junctions where I spliced in the new O2 sensors.
The Saab dealer says that they recommend changing both O2 sensors.
Any ideas? I'm thinking of replacing both O2 sensors and taking extra care to shrink wrap the wire splices to make sure they are water proof. I'm also thinking of digging into the wheel well to check for a vacuum leak that going to the cannister in the passenger side wheel well.
Thanks!
Todd
