The timing chain replacement doesn't seem to be too bad of a procedure if you roll the new chain in from the top. The problem is that the counter balance chain might be worn too. I recall one post where the engine was wedged out to gain access to the chains without removing the engine.
One of my balance chain guides cracked at 175k and I had to remove it. There is really not much difference in vibration so I would not hesitate to remove them on a car of this vintage.
