It is VERY important that you keep an eye on the oil level regardless of whether it's an engine or transmission oil leak. If the oil level drops too far the the leaking unit will DESTROY ITSELF.
The engine oil is checked from the yellow OIL cap in the engine compartment. After taking the dipstick out of the engine, wipe the engine end of the dipstick and reinsert it, then check the oil level. It should be about halfway up the black plastic tip.
The link has a technical note on how to replace transmission oil; it also shows where the 'check' plug is. It's more involved than checking engine oil.

Years ago my brother's manual transmission developed a leak as he was on a long drive. The transmission overheated so badly the bearings seized and made it useless. Be careful!
