The easy way to separate the front ball joint..

I installed a set of koni springs/shocks today and remembered from the previous write-ups that separating the ball joint is complicated for most folks doe to lack of clearance. Here is my technique.. it makes use of the lack of clearance.
First, why this works: Most people think that it is just the pulling force of a puller that pops the ball joint free. They crank and crank on it until it pops. While this works, it usually results in broken tools, knuckles or parts. A screw drive puller is intended to do is put tension on the joint. It is then a sharp blow with a mallet that induces harmonics into the joint to free it.
What I did was to loosen the nut on the ball joint and back it out until the nut is past the threads. Then I wedged something in between the nut and the stub axle. I used a cold chisel here. Keep backing out the nut so that it puts tension on the ball joint. I probably used about 30 ft lbs... not a crazy amount. Next take a hammer or mallet and smack the lower control arm in a bit of a downward motion. It took 3 blows per ball joint and they just popped free. Very gentle. No drama. No funky tools.
Hope that helps someone..
Dave
