Good to have you back in the land of the living. lol.
We'll I have a 2001 T7 and it is very difficult to get my car past mid yellow. The only time it will ever go higher is if it is a cool night and the air is a little thick due to rain. I guess this allows the engine to calculate a bit more timing. The guys at the saab dealership say that this is pretty normal. As far as the "soup can" I think I have seen this as well. If we are talking about the same thing it is located on the right side of the engine between the valve cover and the head where the first cam sits. On mine it is just a seal that is recessed into the engine. Whenever I have seen the "soup can" it has been on cars that have an auto transmission. I'm not really sure what it does, but rest assured neither of us have one so it cant be necessary.
