Why do Saab's have so many irritating foibles that are generally difficult to diagnose and $$$ to cure?
I have an ongoing saga with the CEL (P0442 error code). Suspecting the purge valve I did the flush with WD40 trick a few months back and it stayed off for 500 miles before coming back. I tried the WD40 thing again and it came back on the next day. These results made it look like the purge valve was the likely culprit. In the meantime I also replaced both of the rubber hoses connected to the purge valve (have yet to do the $40 elbow on the throttle body). Not wanting to blow $200 on a new purge valve I have lived with it since then. A few days ago I finally replaced the purge valve and yes, the CEL came on 48hrs later!
I have had a look underneath but to be honest the routing of the hose from the charcoal canister at the rear of the car to the purge valve at the front of the car was not entirely clear. Is there just a long piece of flexible fuel hose from front to back, or is it metal?
Cannot readily smell gas under the car. The gas cap has been changed with another lightly used one. I guess that ridiculously priced 2 inch long rubber elbow to the throttle body is the next thing to replace - anyone any tips with the rest of it?........and yes, I do realize that it could have been both a purge valve leak AND a leak in a hose..............
