I have a 2002 9-3 SE with 83k miles. I've searched the board for a solution to my problem, but the symptoms don't seem to fit what I've read (for example, lots of cold non-starts, lots of cars dying while driving, rough idles, permanent non-starts, no engine turnover, etc.).
Car is running fine otherwise, but it occasionally won't start. It turns over, but just will not catch. It sounds like a flooded carbeurated engine. No CEL, no error codes.
This does not happen when it is cold. It usually happens after stop and go driving and after sitting for a bit of time (anywhere from 15 min to 2 hrs). I have had a Saab Indy check it out twice, but he cannot replicate the non-start.
It has happened 5 times now. First time I left it for 3 hours then tried it and it started. Next time it didn't start (after returning from picking it up from the Saab Indy the first time), I fiddled with things under the hood for 10 minutes, then it started. The 3rd time I fiddled with things under the hood and under the car for 20 minutes, then it started. (btw, I do not believe any "fiddling" has made any difference). The 4th time I ignored it, drove the other car and didn't try it again until the next morning, and it started.
The 5th time, (which is still happening as I write this, my wife is sitting at Starbucks waiting to try it again), my wife says it made an odd "noise" upon successfully starting.
In the board's cummulative experience is this indicative of something? My mechanic and I both agree it is electrical, but what is it? Would love to be able to narrow it down.
I have a record stating the DIC has been replaced. It doesn't seem to be the purge valve. I can hear the fuel pump kick in when I turn the key to on.
Any guidance would be appreciated. In the past, on other cars, I have done my own work, but I don't have the skills or experience with Saabs to diagnose this on my own. Thanks.
