Radio forgetting presets. What to do?

Since a few weeks my stock radio for my 2000 9-3 S has memory loss (literally).
When you switch on the the ignition the radio works fine, comes on with the last frequency used. However, when I want to switch stations to one of the presets, the frequency stored under any preset is empty (108MHz). I can reprogram the presets, then use them, but when I turn of the ignition and switch back on all presets are gone again. So as long as the ignition is on, the presets stay. Switching off and later back on the radio while the ignition is on is fine: the presets stay.
So only when I switch off the ignition the radio loses the presets.

I went to the Saab dealer explaining the problem. They checked the power to the backup when ignition is off and there's 12V there. Their conclusion: "Radio is broken. You need a new one. Cost: 1300 Euro...
After recovery from my heart attack (the dealer is used to this, they have an AED ready) I told them to forget it.

Now I hope someone in this forum has any idea what could cause the problem and what I should try/do to fix it.
One thing I thought I could do is simply connect the radio to permanent power (short the backup and ACC lines on the connector). Or is there some side effect I have to take into account doing this?

Any help is very much appreciated!
