My 99 9-3 T started making the same noise today. I brought it in originally for a cooling system diagnose. It boiled over yesterday even though the gauge never showed the engine was running hot. Hoping it's the thermostat.

Anyway, I have had intermittent problems with my AC not really cooling well and then this rattling noise started. The mechanic showed me the AC compressor area which seemed to be the source of the rattle. The belt tensioner was moving quite a bit and he said the AC pulley had a lot of play.

Here's my question: can this be fixed with just replacing the clutch and pulley or will I need the whole compressor as he claims? There are multiple threads on this but I saw the original post here was my identical problem. Thanks.
