Reset / Reprogram Sport Mode?

Is there a way to reprogram or adjust sport-mode to make it more aggressive. My 96 900seT convertible drives pretty-much the same in either mode, with maybe a slightly-earlier downshift at light-throttle when in drive. The AT shift-linkage is vague-enough on the 900's that I'm somewhat loathe to do a lot of rowing.
I've noticed that most of the gears up-shift at less than 2500rpm, yet the real turbo-torque doesn't kick-in till 3200-3500rpm. Climbing-up on an interstate-ramp, you'd really like to be in 2nd at a steady 3500rpm to be ready to jump into high-speed traffic; yet in Drive it's trying to accelerate in 4th at barely-2000rpm where there's little torque available. Lately I've in manually downshifting into 3rd, then engaging the sport-mode to kick it down to 2nd...or manually downshifting to 2nd.
The kinkage is so "slushy" that I always fear accidentally kicking it into neatral rather than drive as there;'s no detent between them...and there's no dash-indicators like the OG9-3. I miss the tight linkage and knotched gearshifts of my M-Benz', you could manually-shift then all-day without worrying about overshooting a gear up-or-down.
I'm not even sure you can re-shift from neutral to drive while you're still rolling. My friend does that in his Maxima all the time on hills to free-wheel and strech his fuel-meileage; but I've had several cars that stated in the owners-manual to coast to the side of the road and stop before re-engaging drive. I know that was a good way to ruin the old Chrysler Torque-flites....
