Intermittent Starter Problem

We have had a few incidents on my wife's 1997 900S 5-speed where the starter did not crank the engine when starting from warm. All instrument lights are on but nothing happens when trying to start. No clicking or dimming of lights. After a few hours it suddenly starts without any problems. I do not think it's the ignition lock since I replaced it a few years back and this time it does not help to wiggle the key.
I found out by searching this site that the short wire that connects the starter with the starter solenoid could be the problem. Indeed, it was in a bad shape, and when I touched it, it broke off completely. I managed to squeeze the remaining wire in between two washers and screw it back onto the solenoid. The car seems OK now (I can't be sure because the problem happened so rarely) and I even notice the starter cranking faster.
My questions are:
1) Did I fix the right problem? I would think I should at least have heard the starter solenoid clicking even if the starter did not crank the engine, but I did not notice any sounds.
2) The fix is obviously temporary. Do I need to get a new starter or can I buy this wire separately? It seems to be permanently connected to the starter.
Thanks for any help!
