Just a quick report on my the R&R of the rear passernger-side brake rotor on my 98 900SET:

Got the caliper off without too much trouble, using the FAQ here, plus the excellent images at:
http://www.geocities.com/ng900set/main

Ran into the dreaded frozen t-30 on the index screw. I tried to be careful, but I stripped it out, so I went and borrowed a dremel in order to cut a slot in it. When that didn't work (I may not have cut the slot deep enough), I went ahead and ground off the top of the screw with what was left of an old grinding tip I had. Then it started to rain...

This morning, I got a new grinding tip and it worked like a charm. With a fresh #952 AlOx stone, I was able to take off the last of the screw head, whereupon the rotation of the grinder against the shaft backed out the screw completely. A few blows of the rubber mallet later, the rotor was off.

Then came the parking brake shoes. The various springs came off reasonably easily, but what a pain it was to get things back on. Too bad eeuroparts doesn't carry the tools the WIS recommends, though I'm not sure even they'd make the job *easy.* I worked out that the best way to re-seat what SeeVTSaab (http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/members/gallery.html?memberID=74&do=show&id=9301) called the "Shoe Retainers" was the press on the "lock washer" over the retaining pin with a slightly-opened pair of needle-noses, pin the washer in place with a flathead screwdriver, and then grab the blade of the retaining pin and twist it with the (now conveniently positioned) pliers. Surprisingly, the baggie of parts that came with my parking brake shoes contained new pins and springs, but not these washers, and the blade of the new pins wouldn't fit through the keyhole of the old washers, so I just reused the springs I had. (Too bad, because the new pins have a phillips-cross on their head, which would have made the twist-lock process much easier.)

Thankfully, living in Georgia, there was very little corrosion on the springs and spreader. Reseating those springs was a royal PITA. I tried Dean's clotheshanger trick (from the front caliper springs) here, to no avail. Finally, I worked out that I could lever the spring with the tip of a long flathead screwdriver until the edge of the spring just caught the edge of the mounting hole, then bully it into the hole with a couple taps from another screwdriver blade held at 90 degrees from the first.

I think my ebrake adjustment gizmo is shot, though, as it came apart in my hands and it doesn't feel as though the internal threads are really engaging. Turning the star doesn't change its length, at least. Anyone know the part# for this?

From there, mounting the new rotor and replacing the caliper and pads was pretty straightforward, even in the rain. Tapping in the guide pins from under the car is a trick, though. I'll certainly never complain about the front calipers, again!
