I keep my old car because I like to drive it, but as a former reliability engineer, I know that to keep that as my only car is a risky proposition. So, I also have a 2006 9-3. Once, I went to Chicago and my alternator began to fail at about 95,000 miles. That's to be expected, but I got reamed on the price because I was downtown and didn't want to have to get towed as the alternator wasn't completely dead at that point.
I admire the fact that you drive an older car. However, you're not a typical customer and you're not an ideal customer for an auto manufacturer, except from the standpoint as a potential brand ambassador.
This isn't meant to be a reflection on you, but this thread reminds me that there are way too many people today that expect their cars to last forever without any maintenance or any parts replacement. Those people bug me. Then they get outraged that GM or whoever won't pay to have their car fixed at 137,000 miles when their alternator dies.
