Yesterday, while I was driving in normal stop-and-go traffic I noticed a faint "gurgling" noise start up as I was idling that was the same pattern and slightly higher pitch as the normal purr of the engine. This gurgling then increases in pattern and pitch as I accelerate, and decreases to the same as it was at idle when i release the accelerator. Other than this noise, nothing else seems to be wrong as the rest of the car handles fine. However, with a lengthy drive to Indianapolis looming this coming weekend, I'm concerned about the stability of the engine if this is indeed a problem.
I have read all the other threads relating to a "gurgling" sound and can't seem to figure out if they compare. In the other threads, the owners state that the sound specifically does not increase in pattern and pitch when accelerating/decelerating, as mine does.
Also of note is that roughly half a year ago I had my car checked at a dealer and the mechanic noted that the serpentine belt had a little bit of wear, and he suggested having it replaced sometime in the future to avoid problems. It wasn't a necessity at the time, though, so I passed on that repair. So maybe the serpentine belt has something to do with the noise?
I popped the hood today and check the alignment of the belt and fluid levels and everything thing seemed to be OK. The sound of the gurgling noise was coming from the serpentine belt / engine head area, so that is only why I thought the belt might be suspect.
Any suggestions about the cause of the noise? Is it a critical problem?
Thanks,
Colin
