I recently had diagnosed a noise down to the AC compressor. (By the way a $10 mechanics stethoscope makes a positive ID very easy. Not enough people use them as a diagnostic tool.) Through the posts on this board I had gotten in touch with Adam Barczyk and he shipped me a new clutch hub with a machined pulley and new bearing. That seemed to fix the problem. Drove to work for a few days and everything seems fine.

Assuming that we were good to go I elected to take the Saab on a vacation from MD to NC. The trip down was fine. Running around town was fine. Beach and back was fine.. but 1/2 way through the trip back it started making some bad noises. The kind of noises that you don't want to hear several hundred miles from home. AC on or off didn't seem to matter so we kept it on for a while.

200 miles away: At first it was just an occasional screeching but would go away in a few seconds. Next it got louder but would go away quickly.

100 miles away: It took a few times for me to believe it was me and not another vehicle so I backed off from 85mph and killed the AC.

40 miles away it was sounding REALLY angry.
30 miles away we hit some traffic and could begin to smell badness from while stopped.
25 miles away it somehow got very quiet.
20 miles away smoke began to billow while sitting at a light so I pulled over and killed the engine.

The only water I had was a few leftover beers so I opened a Harp and poured it on the AC compressor and pulley to keep from setting the belt on fire. It was HOT. So hot that after sitting for a few minutes it melted the plastic idler pulley and managed to fuse itself to the rest of them.

So after a tow home I'm left with replacing stuff and the shopping list is getting big. Assuming the real heat source was the overheating AC pulley or compressor I am wondering how far it might have overheated other parts.. in particular I'm thinking about the rubber in the harmonic balancer or any internal rubber parts close that side of the block. I suppose the entire AC system will need to be flushed and that probably means a new receiver/dryer.

Any thoughts on what else I should be looking to replace while I pull this thing apart besides the obvious?

Many thanks.

dave
