The mileage seems somewhat low for chain noise; my 1995 900S has 167,000 miles and is still quiet. Was the timing chain tensioner removed and measured? This can give some indication of timing chain & guide wear. It only takes a few minutes to do this. Also, if it is the balance chain, many people have removed them by cutting the chain and found only a hint more engine vibration without it. This is still a fairly substantial job, as the subframe has to be loosened and the oil pan dropped, but at least the engine stays in the car. Engine removal is required to replace the balance chain.
If it's the timing chain, this can be replaced by rolling a new one (requires purchasing a chain with a master link). The problem with this approach is that replacing the chain and not the plastic guides also may not help for too long. Any ides what your mechanic is actually doing for the $1200?
