Shifter Linkage Question - 1997 900SE

Thanks to my post I understand the issue is with the shifter linkage. However, after reviewing a bunch of the old posts and reading information online I still do not see my specific issue covered.
The part that is defective is shown here. The nylon linkage connector becomes detached from the stud shown on the right side of the picture. I can very quickly reattach it and everything is fine for a few days, and then the socket will then come off the ball.
The part that disconnects is the socket on the right side of the linkage as shown in this picture.

So the question is do I have to replace th whole linkage, or is there some other fix that some clever person has figured out to keep the socket attached. Everything seems to work OK, the card shifts OK (may be a little sloppy but has always been that way).
Before I go spend $250 for the new linkage I just want to see if there may be a cheaper solution. Also, all the stuff I read talks about the problems with the old style linkage on the 1994-1996 cars, but mine already has the new style.
