Several weeks ago I bought a '97 SAAB-SE Turbo. I was checking for the root cause of a CEL code -- intermittent misfire in cylinder 4 -- when
I discovered a small amount of coolant (bright green with no oil in it) on the bottom of the well/cavity where the DIC is secured.
The first time I checked everything out, it was clear there was about 1/4 ounce of coolant that had pooled around spark plug 4. There was some coolant "wetting the top of spark plug 2 as well. For the record, the inside walls of the DIC ports that fit over these two spark plugs were also wet. Spark plug 4 was corroded as well, but not "fouled."
I replaced all the plugs, cleaned the area out and "cleared" the CEL.
The light did not come back on. The car passed emissions in Georgia several days later.
I started a ritual of removing the DIC and checking for coolant. It seems
the amoount of coolant is going down. There no longer is any around spark plug 2 and its port. There remains just a bit at the top of spark plug 4 and its tip. It seems to be lessening, but it is still there.
The "theory" I came up with goes like this. The coolant is seeping down into the ports and onto the plug(s) from the DIC cartridge (bear with me).
There is no way this could be so unless some one, filling the coolant resevoir accidentally poured over the DIC with some leaking directly into the cavity/well and, perhaps, some worked its way into the DIC itself and
into the ports that fit over the two plugs I found were "wet."
I cannot come up with a way that the coolant could be getting into the spots I am finding it due to a poor seal or gasket. Wishful thinking or
good analysis? Please let me know what you think.
Other than that, this is a wonderful SAAB, full of pep and energy now that it's under the care of the SAABNet and English/Swedish Car Spares in
North Atlanta.
Thanks in advance for taking time to help me figure this one out!
