The socket on the side isn't proprietary, it's a standard 8-pin DIN jack, and that's by far the best and easiest way to add a subwoofer. I added one using the rear channel outputs in the DIN jack and it sounded great. I later added an amp for the rear speakers, and that made it sound even better. For a while I even used all four channels in the DIN jack, connected up to a 4-channel Soundstream crossover that gave me a non-fading subwoofer output, plus it stripped out the bass for the front door speakers and the rear speakers. That was pretty nice considering the stock head unit was still there, but it required a lot of tinkering. I would check eBay every now and then to see if a Saab DIN cable ever comes up for auction. With one of those you can either hack one end off and solder RCA jack onto it, or make up an adapter that goes from an 8-pin DIN jack to RCA plugs and leave the cable intact.
