I never worked on a BMW so I can't compare, but i would think that for the most part front wheel drive is a bit more difficult to work on seeing all the components are crammed together.
That said, the C900 SPG I owned was the easiest car to work on that I've ever owned. The 99 Turbo I owned was a bit cramped and the water pump was a royal pain (special tool). The clutch was stupid easy to access on these old Saabs although they lasted forever.
