Replace hood shocks with hatch shocks, why not?

I finally bought replacements for both the hatch shocks & the hood shocks. The hatch shocks still worked, but they were getting weak & they were drooping in the cold last winter. The hood shocks were shot & I needed a stick to keep the hood open.

I replaced the hatch shocks first, with the idea that weak hatch shocks might still work to keep the hood open. The hatch shocks have 1" longer cylinders than the hood shocks, which is about the same as the amount of unused rod on the hood shocks.

Only one hood shock was blown (I was going to replace both now & keep the old active one as a spare), so I only replaced that blown unit with an old hatch shock & kept the old working hood shock in its place. I carefully checked closing clearances & everything seems to be good. The longer cylinder on the hatch shock comes just up to the plastic fitting on the lower knuckle when closing the hood, but doesn't appear to hit it. The hood now raises itself again & stays up on its own.

What problems am I setting myself up for with this arrangement? Since the shock is gas charged, I can see the seals failing early due to the extra 1" compression of the rod into the cylinder. Other than a mess from the cylinder oil, is there a safety issue with that? Are there other things I'm overlooking?
