When I had my car dealership I used to look at 30-40 cars a week and I've seen all of these conditions on many occassions. You most definately can get oil in the antifreeze from a bad head gasket, and I've seen it enough to conclude it's fairly common. You can sometimes see beads of antifreeze on the dipstick, other times if it's been going on for a while the oil will be a milky white color. You can often see steam coming from the oil fill and dipstick along with the smell of antifreeze. Sometimes you can see air bubbles in the expansion tank. A lot depends on the various passages that can be affected when the head gasket fails. This guy is up in the mountains in a remote location so a compression test isn't an option. We're talking quick and dirty field tests here, any or all of which may apply.
