You know, I never quite thought to check if it varied with RPM, because revving or even feathering the throttle right after startup definitely makes it shudder and nearly stall. I embarrassed the crap out of myself by trying that in the parking lot after work today..."No, thanks, I don't need a ride home, this just happens sometimes when it's cold!"

The woo sound does vary with RPM, but inversely: the pitch goes DOWN as the revs increase. I *think* the length of the woo decreases to almost nothing, the warmer the car is when started.

Since the mercury reached 35F in northeast PA today, it was easier to finally get the car warmed up. At that point I determined that not only was the idle more stable, but the hestitation when hitting the throttle was gone too. Wouldn't a TB/TPS problem more likely be independent of temperature?

Anyway, I was getting low on gas so I picked up 12oz of Techron concentrate at AutoZone (free with mail-in rebate!). All of this is making me think the A/F mixture is off when the engine is cold, during which time it would want to increase the injection to warm itself. Maybe it also opens the throttle wider at idle, but the injectors aren't spraying as much fuel as the ECU wants. Lean mixture causes rough running and stalling, which would explain why it shudders when I open the throttle even wider, yes?

Well, fingers crossed and will post with an update once I burn through this tank. A free bottle of Techron beats a $199 throttle body any day! And I also bought everything I need to change the #&%$ thermostat...at least that'll make the symptoms subside quicker if they don't vanish entirely.
