OK, I picked up my car this morning from the dealer. They replaced the short block and I have a bunch of new gaskets, seals, etc. All covered by the Sludge Special Policy. The whole thing took about ten days.
Saab of Greenwich (CT) was pleasant and helpful the entire time. Kudos to Jim (service manager) and the others there.
Before I brought the car in, I went through all my old paperwork and pulled out copies of the oil change receipts from the past few years. I usually got the oil changed at a local place. The receipts weren't perfect--no VIN, one of them wasn't dated, one of them didn't have the mileage on it. The one without a date was done at the same time as an inspection so I could put a date on that one. The one without the mileage was halfway between two other oil changes which were only 13,000 miles apart. They all said "Mobil 1." All this was good enough to satisfy whoever the regional manager was who had to approve it.
Going forward I have been advised to change the oil every 5 months of 5,000 miles, and only use synthetic oil.
When I first started looking into the sludge issues a few weeks ago, I thought I would have problems. Lots of people had complaints and very few people seemed to have received anything under the sludge policy.
All-in-all, I'm a pretty satisfied customer.
