When going into reverse, do you still have to "lift up" to get the gear shifter to go into reverse, or does it just go into reverse without having to do that?
The reason I ask is because there's a plastic guide that has 2 functions that you can see when you remove the leather boot. The guide has a feature that sticks up, and stops the shifter from going into reverse unless you lift the slider on the shifter to cause it to clear the stand-up feature. Also, this guide stops the shifter from going all the way to the right, which is what you're experiencing.
I know about this because mine was broken by an incompetant valet driver forcing the gear into reverse without lifting up. Sounds like your mechanic either forgot to put that guide back on, or it may be broken. Its not expensive or hard to replace.
