In automatic transmissions, putting the shifter in park engages a pawl or pin that locks against the gears. It's strong enough to keep the car from rolling when stopped, but is not meant to be engaged while the car is already moving. This might have been damaged or stressed, and a clear sign would have been if the car continued rolling after the front wheels hit the ground. The car really should have been in neutral, in my opinion.
I see no reason to suspect the rear parking brake (e-brake) unless it was actually on while towing, which would be almost as stupid as dropping the car. Putting an auto trans in park does not engage the e-brake, so there wouldn't have been anything stopping the rear wheels from rolling.
