Having bought a very similar car last spring and a 9-5 just last week I can tell you that the importance of a PPI and knowing that it was well taken care of. On both cars, I made sure to call the dealers to check on service history. On the convertible I would check to see how clean the entire top system is. A ton of leaves and dirt isn't a good sign.
As said before, make sure the sludge is checked for. There are also updates to the PCV that should have been done. Searchign the board will find lots of info on both of these.
I will say though that regular maintenence (5k oil changes, etc) SHOULD mean that it has been taken care of and is clean inside. Both of my cars have super clean oil pans and have had M1 every 5k.
