Coolant Temp Strangeness

'98 900 SE w 148K. I had my heater hoses changed last week. I've had to add coolant twice since I got it back, which I assume was air in the system. I think the heater hose has been leaking for some time--I used to add a couple of ounces of coolant every few months. The temperature gage has been running at around one half since I picked up the car. For the previous 3.5 years I owned the car it ran at a little over 1/3rd. The other strange thing is that the coolant reservoir is running very cool. Last week it was in the high forties here and after driving around for a while it was luke warm. Today it's 34 out and after driving around for 40 minutes it was still cold. It always used to be hot once the car was up to operating temperature. I stopped by the mechanic and told him the tale. He put it on his scanner and the temp was 84 C, which he said was normal. He said the cooling fan didn't come on until 104 C and that maybe it's actually running cooler now that the leak has been fixed. It drives normally otherwise. Do I have a problem (thermostat?) or is it running as it should?
