I got a pair of MB Quart 164 mid-bass speakers off the auction site for a reasonable price. I was looking for a mid-bass as I intend to keep the stock amp. There were several selections but I went with the MB Quarts as they were supposed to be highly efficient.

Went to Radio Shack and Best Buy looking for speaker connections and other do-dads. Clearly I am an amateur at this, as the selection at both was weak. On a hunch, also went to auto-zone. They sold a Metra "Speaker Harness Adapter" for GM cars (AW-4500s).

This adapter did not fit the SAAB one, but it looked to me as if they flat blades inside the plastic adaptor might fit. I got it, and after a few minutes (and only a little blood) was able to free the wires and blades from inside adaptor. They then fit nicely into the SAAB unit and the other end hooked up my new speaker.

Bolted it in nicely, added lots of electric tape, and turned it on. BIG disappointment: can't hear anything. I haven't done extensive tests on this. I put the old speaker back on (torn foam ring) and it appeared to work, so the wires are carrying some power. If the new speaker is working, I can't hear it at all. When I crank up the volume all the way, I think feel some vibrations but they are minor.

Haven't decided about sound-proofing yet. Looking at the door insert, the plastic door pocket could use some insulation as it used to rattle quite a bit. There is also some white polystreme foam inside the door insert: not sure if that is for sound or safety. I read Rob Mustard's excellent post on sound proofing, but haven't had a chance to buy any yet. Part of the problem is I don't know any stores in Washington that carry stuff like that so I can browse around for a bit.

Final takeaway: the Autozone GM adaptor can be modified to plug into the SAAB ones. I believe that should also be true of the dash speakers, which I had also mutilated two years ago when they failed.
