Viggens have problem areas, but little no none of them are much of a deal breaker, maybe just a bargaining point. First off, all 9-3's have a poor chassis design in terms of flex and lack of rigidity... and you are looking at that plus the loss of even more structural integrity with a convertible. Invest in GS hardware in pretty much this order; 6 pt. subframe brace AND steering rack clamp/brace (kind of tied really), upgraded strut tower brace, and finally the rear strut tower brace (I think it works on convertibles). The motor/transmission mounts are junk to begin with, again I would get GS replacements.
General condition will tell the most in my opinion. I just bought an absolutely pristine '02 under a month ago from some doctor who babied it and was quite anal about things, and I felt completely reassured by that. If you come across some slob, odds are he was a slob with the car.
But regardless get a Viggen, you won't regret it.
