Ok, I was bored so I decided to compare these specs and see which was better (on paper). Here's the verdict:
Compared to a standard A3-spec oil, E7-spec diesel oils have the following differences:
Pros:
Higher TBN (9.0 Min instead of 8.0 Min)
Longer (3x!) shear stability (tested at 90 cycles instead of 30)
More/different wear tests
More/different soot tests
Cons:
More Sulfated Ash (2.0 Max instead of 1.6 Max)
Allows for 10% more weakening/stiffening in elastomer type RE1
Allows for 15% more weakening/swelling in elastomer type RE3-04
Twice as much high temperature foaming
No high temp deposits/ring sticking test
Different (less?) sludge tests
Allows more cam wear(!)
Based on the specs, Diesel oil might not be any better performing, but its definitely going to last longer.
