Yes, this second box is what the air inlet of the filter air box connects to. This second "air box" has no filter and doesn't appear serviceable (no screws, latches, etc.). As the air tubing passes through this box, it curves down and then back up. It's seems kind of like a P-trap under the kitchen/bath sink. I wonder if this second box is meant to trap excess sand, dirt, water heading to the air filter. The air passage has a number of holes in it as it passes through the box that would allow ???? to fall into the box.

Another strange thing. If we follow backwards from the air filter air inlet, through the second "air box", the second box connects on the other end to another air passage/tube that actually curves up over the wheel well and heads towards the rear of the car. I have no idea where the end of this goes.

It looks like this whole system is meant to pull air from somewhere far away from the engine compartment which was very dusty when I got my car (just a month ago). I think by just checking the air filter frequently, I could maybe just take this second box out. More performance or maybe just noisier?

Anyway, the lower mounting tab to the #2 air box is broken and the box was sagging down so the air inlet wasn't pulling much air through it. I'll rig this and put it all back together.
