Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Question

Have a 1995 Saab 900 SE V6 with almost--not quite--199K.
Heard clucks over speed bumps, and noise when turning. Got the car on a lift to check things out and mechanic found a very loose (1/4 inch play) Ball joint on the drivers side (screwdriver trick!). Right side is tight.
Strut mounts are OK.
At any rate..I'm almost afraid to drive the car till I get the part.
Here's the question. I know what happens when ball joints fail. $$$ tight right now. New the part at a site sponsor is $261, generic (Scan Tech) is $139. Mechanic says he MAY be able to find a used one--and install it for $150.
A) Is it OK to put on a good used one? Never heard of anyone on the board doing it...
B) Mechanic said not to turn hard (needlessly), what out for potholes, and avoid hard braking...next week I have about 100 miles (over a few trips) of traveling to do...I'm nervous about using the car, but need to go to some appointments that I cannot change.
Anyway to tell if failure is imminent. Anyone with experience on this?
Suggestions please.
Thank you all once again for your help--ahead of time...
