I recently purchased a 2003 93 Convertible as well. Over all I think it's a great car. I certainly wouldn't call it tight though. Mine has 52000 miles when I purchased it. I got it at a decent price, and like to tinker on things after a long day. So far I've done:
Two oil changes (just to see how clean I can get it)
Changed the MTF twice (used Saab 0063)
Had the SID screen replaced by Simon in the UK
Cleaned and cleaned the leather seats
Treated the top
rehab'd the paint
New windshield (cracked when I purchased it)
new tires
adjusted the hand brake
rehab'd the headlight wipers
changed the cabin air filter
spark plugs
and other various nits like the rear interior lights...
But I like the car, it runs great and the engine and underneath is very clean. I am fabricating a tiny camera that I can stick in the drain hole of the pan so I can view the pick-up on my netbook screen. Pulling the pan is probably a good idea, but it's only a one time peek. With a camera I could check every oil change.
